Another visit to Care for Wild: STS’s commitment to rhino conservation continues

This year, the team at STS once again had the incredible opportunity to visit Care for Wild, the world’s largest rhino orphanage located in the heart of South Africa. Our staff spent a week engaging in hands-on conservation efforts, contributing to the remarkable work being done to rescue and rehabilitate rhinos affected by poaching and habitat loss.

A week of dedication and learning

The visit began with an enlightening orientation led by the passionate team at Care for Wild. They shared heart-wrenching stories of the rhinos they care for, highlighting the challenges they face daily in a world that often prioritises profit over preservation. As a team, we learned about the organisation’s extensive rehabilitation programmes, which focus not only on the physical recovery of these majestic animals but also on their emotional well-being.

During our time there, we participated in various activities, including:

  • Feeding and caring for the orphans: Every day began with the crucial task of feeding the rhino calves. Witnessing their playful nature and trusting demeanour as they nuzzled against us was an unforgettable experience. Each interaction reminded us of the importance of our role in their recovery.
  • Participating in habitat enrichment: Our team assisted in creating enriching environments for the rhinos, ensuring they could engage in natural behaviours. This included providing branches for browsing and creating water pools for them to play in. The joy of watching the rhinos explore their surroundings was heart-warming.
  • Conservation education: We attended workshops that discussed the broader implications of rhino conservation, including the impact of poaching on biodiversity and local communities. It was a stark reminder that our efforts extend beyond the orphanage, emphasising the need for comprehensive strategies that involve education and community engagement.

The impact of our visit

Throughout the week, we not only learned about the significant efforts at Care for Wild but also contributed to ongoing projects aimed at ensuring a sustainable future for rhinos. Each member of the STS team returned with a renewed commitment to conservation, inspired to spread awareness about the plight of rhinos and the importance of supporting organisations like Care for Wild.

As we left the orphanage, it was evident that our time spent there had a profound effect on all of us. The resilience of the rhinos, coupled with the dedication of the Care for Wild team, serves as a powerful reminder that every action counts in the fight against wildlife crime.

We encourage everyone to support rhino conservation efforts. Whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading awareness, there are many ways to contribute to this vital cause. Together, we can make a difference and help protect these incredible creatures for future generations.
